St. John’s Lutheran Church of Rock Township started holding worship services in rural Mitchell County in 1868 and formally established in 1871. Our present house of worship was built in 1874 and has been remodeled and added on to several times with the last addition done in 1995 to make our sanctuary handicap accessible.
Our strong Lutheran faith was formed by our German and Norwegian ancestors. With their guidance and blessings, the early pastors of our congregation began mission work in North Iowa and Southern Minnesota, establishing new congregations in neighboring communities. We continue to have strong relationships with other congregations in our community to this day, having been partnered with Faith in Mitchell since 1991 and enjoying our current relationship with Rock Creek and St. Luke as well.
We have been blessed with having outstanding leadership over the years from many pastors, including being one of the first congregations in the area with a woman pastor.
Our faith remains strong as we share our blessings with our neighbors in our community, our state, and worldwide. We will continue to serve God because we have been blessed to be a blessing.
